WHALE & HISTORICAL
With the formation of the Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant, a significant collection of contemporary and historical works of art was brought together. Glenhyrst is proud to house the country’s largest collection of paintings by 19th Century artist Robert Reginald Whale, his sons John Claude, Robert Heard and nephew John Hicks Whale. Their landscapes, portraits and animal studies document the cultural heritage of the Brant County area.

WORKS ON PAPER/GRAPHICS
A renowned grouping of contemporary Canadian works on paper constitutes the balance of the collection. Initiated by the Art Gallery of Brant through nine nationally acclaimed Graphex exhibitions, this body of lithographs, etchings, serigraphs and drawings includes works from some of the country’s finest printmakers and artists working on paper, such as Otis Tamasaukas, J.C. Heywood, Derek Michael Besant, Margaret May and Jo Manning. Between 1970 and 1985 the Art Gallery of Brant received numerous donations of prints from Walter Carsen. The works are mainly by 20th century European artists such as Karel Appel, Josef Albers, Jim Dine, Jean Dubuffet, Jean Paul Riopelle, Jacques Villon and others.

OUTDOOR ART SCULPTURE
The collection has expanded to include unique modern sculpture that complement the landscape throughout the gardens. These outdoor artworks incorporate either organic material in their construction or organic form as structure. These include “Life Mound” by artist V. Jane Gordon, “11 from two” by artist Ryszard Litwiniuk and “Hedera” by artist Marguerite Larmand. Two new sculptures recently installed are "Hearing the Song" by Marianne Reim and "Meg's Pause" by David Hind. Please call the gallery for a self-guided brochure of these outdoor artworks.
