TALES FROM THE LAB – Writing with Larry Brown

Saturdays – May 30 to June 20, 2020
Duration: 4 weeks

Rules? What rules? In this writing workshop you will experiment and create short stories that surprise and are told in a unique way that may, at first, cause a head scratch or two. Suitable for new and experienced writers, bring pen and paper or a laptop. (Lab coat is optional…)

Beginner’s Acrylic Painting with Linda Blakney, M.B.A., M.A.

Tuesdays – April 21 to June 9, 2020

Perfect for “newbies”. This course is designed for those who have never tried acrylics or have limited painting skills. Through weekly enjoyable and interesting exercises, you will gain skills in using this versatile medium.

Watercolour Painting with Chelo Sebastian

Mondays – April 20 to June 15, 2020

Using the properties of watercolour, you will learn to be more spontaneous & experimental. Large paper and big brushes, as well as ink, pastels and wax, will be used to develop your own unique style. Loosen up, be spontaneous, inventive and find answers to the question: “When is the painting finished?”

WORKSHOPS


Oil Painting with Jeanette Obbink

Saturday April 18 2020
Time: 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Location: The Cottage at Glenhyrst

Paint alongside Jeanette as she demonstrates step by step colour mixing and techniques to develop a landscape from photograph. You will be completing the same landscape in oil paint. (Participants may also use water-based oil. This class is not suitable for acrylic paints.)

Gel Plate Printmaking with Aliki Mikulich, BA Fine Arts

Sunday May 3, 2020
Time: 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Location: The Coach House at Glenhyrst

Learn how to create beautiful, one-of-a-kind prints for mixed media,
card-making, etc. using Gel Printing Plates. Students will be
introduced to the process and after an in-depth demonstration, will
have plenty of time for experimenting with different techniques. Idea
generating, exploration and sharing of experiences will be highlighted.
Everyone will be given a 5 x 5” reusable gel plate and a roller to keep
for their own use. Guidance and advice will be provided throughout the
workshop.

The gel plates allow great levels of detail and rich dimension to
prints. Individual plates are housed in a durable clamshell packaging
that can be re-used to keeps plates safe from scuffing, marring and
particulates when not in use. These are specifically formulated for use
with any printmaking ink. We will be using a water-based block printing
ink for easy cleanup.

Participants are encouraged to bring items from home, for use in the
printing process. These items can include paper cut outs, flat pressed
flowers and leaves, stencils, stamps etc. We will also be able to
create our own cut outs, and other items to use.

Spring Photography Workshop with Brian Thompson

Spring is a wonderful time for photography! This class will teach you to think and shoot like a pro. Take control of your DSLR camera to achieve the results you want. If you don’t own a DSLR camera, you will understand why you want one. Beginners are welcome, but a DSLR camera with the ability to shoot in a manual exposure mode is recommended.

Adobe inDesign: An Introduction with Jeanette Obbink

An Introduction to InDesign presents the core features and techniques that make this powerful page layout application easy to use—and provides a foundation to build more advanced skills and workflows. Learn how to navigate the workspace, manage documents, create flexible master pages, work with text frames and graphics, and export and print finished documents. Adobe Photoshop: An Introduction with Jeanette Obbink

Fridays: April 17 and April 24
Time: 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Location: Glenhyrst Main Gallery
In this class you will learn the ins and outs of Adobe Photoshop and how to use the program to improve your photographs. Discover all this software can do! We will learn the tricks of the trade to produce top quality photography. We will also cover industry standards to output images for web, print and other formats. Is photography not your medium? This course is ideal for people who want to use photos as a starting point for their paintings. Learn about values, contrast, colour correction and much more.

NOTE: A laptop and software is required for this course. A monthly subscription for Adobe Photoshop is available at Adobe.com (Current price is $9.99/mth USD). Make sure to have it available on your computer before arrival at the class.

Payment
Class size is limited, so register early to avoid disappointment. Pre-registration is required for all classes and is on a first-come, first served basis with full payment. Registrations can be made online, in person, by phone, fax or mail.

Cheque, cash, debit, VISA and MasterCard payments are accepted. NOTE: 13% HST must now be added to all Adult Class Fees. A $20 charge is applied to NSF cheques.

Refunds/Cancellations
Occasionally a class will not reach its full enrollment and must be cancelled, in which case a class refund will be issued. Otherwise, class refunds are issued for medical reasons only with presentation of a doctor’s certificate. A $10 administration fee applies.
