Time: 1pm – 3:30pm

Location: Coach House

Duration: 6 weeks

Always wanted to try oil paints but daunted by the medium? This workshop will allow you to test and discover techniques needed in the use of oil painting. Using a still life we will explore its possibilities to create your own masterpiece. Please note this is not suitable for acrylic painting.

Supplies needed (provided by student): a sketch block, pencil or charcoal, paints (the following colours are recommended as a minimum: Titanium White, Lemon Yellow, Ochre, Quinacridone Red (Or Rose Madder or Cadmium Red deep), Ultramarine Blue, Raw Umber – helpful other colours are Cadmium yellow medium or deep, Manganese or Cerulean Blue, and possibly a green). Non smelling solvent or if working with water solubles a water container; a variety of sizes relatively stiff brushes (hog hair or synthetic), a palette knife is optional, and as many canvases as you think you will need – no bigger than 16×20. A field easel, palette with a large flat surface for mixing colours. If you need to purchase paints – it is encouraged to NOT buy the cheapest option – paints are priced according to the amount of pigments they have. Low quality paints are difficult to work with as they do not contain enough pigment to allow for good mixing or intensity in colour. Level 2 is a good start.

Outdoor

Photography

with Instructor Brian Thompson

Time: 10 am – 4 pm each day

Location: Coach House & Gardens

Duration: 2 days

Fees: $120 non-members / $100 members

Participants to bring their own lunch.

Despite the myriad restrictions we’ve been under for several months, photography is a wonderful diversion to let our minds think in different ways, and get outdoors to connect with and capture the beauty of the community around us.Participants will gain an understanding of the technical elements of their camera, so they can shoot with confidence and achieve higher-quality results.

The emphasis will be on outdoor photography possibilities including landscapes, nature and architecture. You will be encouraged to constantly think about composition, creativity and lighting techniques that can be applied to any subject you decide to shoot with your newfound knowledge and skills.

Ideally one should have a DSLR that you can interchange lenses. But a bridge camera (like a DSLR, but just has one lens), or even a point & shoot will suffice, so long as there are controls for Program/Auto Mode, Shutter Priority, Aperature Priority, and Manual mode. (P-S-A-M).  That way you can get the most out of what I’m teaching, and your camera as well.
