Watercolour Painting with Chelo Sebastian

Mondays – September 9 to November 4, 2019
(No classes October 14 – Thanksgiving weekend)

Using the properties of watercolour, you will learn to be more spontaneous & experimental. Large paper and big brushes, as well as ink, pastels and wax, will be used to develop your own unique style. Loosen up, be spontaneous, inventive and find answers to the question: “When is the painting finished?”

Introduction to Acrylic Painting with Linda Blakney, M.B.A., M.A.

Mondays – September 9 to November 4, 2019

Working in colour can be tricky, so during these classes we will explore the theory and the use of colour through exercises and application in finished paintings. There will be a simple still life set up to work from, or you can bring a photo to use as a starting point for your painting. We will look at composition and balance using line, shape and colour. Expect the first weeks to be heavier on exercises, so that in the second half you can implement what you have learned.

Ignite your creative energies and discover the magic of abstract art with a class that challenges you to use different media and experiment with unusual techniques. In the Ignite experience, you will get to work with a range of materials and combine them to develop new expressions – all based on elements of design. Some of the materials we will work with include: India Ink, acrylic and alcohol inks, powdered graphite, watercolours, acrylics, mylar, foils and printing inks. All materials included in cost of registration.

Acrylic Painting with Robert Murray

Come and enjoy a relaxed and fun painting class that will provide you with a simple way of painting subjects and scenes that inspire you. Robert will guide you through a step-by-step process to complete a painting and together you will consider properties of acrylic paint, subject selection, medium, and the many aspects of COLOUR!

Fall Photography Workshop with Brian Thompson

Fall is such a wonderful time to take pictures with all the colours around. Learn to think and shoot like a pro. Take control of your DSLR camera to achieve the results you want. If you don’t own a DSLR camera, you will understand why you want one. Beginners are welcome, but a DSLR camera with the ability to shoot in a manual exposure mode is recommended.

FLASH Writing with Larry Brown

Free those great story ideas bobbing about inside your head! In this class you will create compelling characters and complex stories and do it in less than 1000 words…or 500 words…or even 100 words. You will learn how to write dialogue that shoots sparks. You will WRITE WRITE WRITE. Bring pen/pencil and paper or your laptop.

Adobe Photoshop: An Introduction with Jeanette Obbink

In this class you will learn the ins and outs of Adobe Photoshop and how to use the program to improve your photographs. Discover all this software can do! We will learn the tricks of the trade to produce top quality photography. We will also cover industry standards to output images for web, print and other formats. Is photography not your medium? This course is ideal for people who want to use photos as a starting point for their paintings. Learn about values, contrast, colour correction and much more.

Landscapes in Oil Painting with Jeanette Obbink

Session 1: Saturday November 2, 2019
Session 2: Saturday November 16, 2019

Register for both and receive a $10 discount

Session one:
Paint alongside Jeanette as she demonstrates step by step colour mixing and techniques to develop a landscape from photograph. You will be completing the same landscape in oil paint. (Participants may also use water-based oil. This class is not suitable for acrylic paints)

Materials: canvas or wood panel (no smaller than 12×16 and not larger than 24×36), brushes of various sizes, paint, odorless turpentine and small container for your turps, paper towel or rags, a flat palette (a sheet of glass, Perspex or wood is ideal, but a tear-of paper palette works as well).
Bring at least the following colours: titanium white, cadmium lemon, cadmium deep, yellow ochre, quinacridone red or rose madder, blue ultramarine, manganese or cerulean blue, raw umber. A table or standing easel – (Glenhyrst has a few table easels available).

Session two:
Bring your own printed photo (one that you took) and let’s explore how that can be made into a painting. The same techniques and materials used in session one will apply to this class.

Relief Printmaking with Aliki Mikulich, BA Fine Arts

Sunday November 10, 2019
Time: 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Relief Printmaking is a technique using a block of material (wood, lino, linosoft) which is carved and then repeated images are printed on paper and other materials using inks. In this 6-hour introductory workshop participants will work on a 4 x 6 piece of linosoft to create an image that will be printed repeatedly to create an edition of prints. A second, more complex image will be created after the first preliminary work. The second part of the session will include instruction on how to create a layered colour image using the reduction method of carving and printing. All materials included in cost of registration.

An Introduction to Mosaics with Heather Vollans

Saturday November 16, 2019
Time: 10:00 am to 4:00 pm

Working on a prepared plywood board, you will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of materials to produce an ungrouted mosaic artwork. Students will be encouraged to use a maximum of 3 different materials in any combination of colours and/or textures and to utilise a very simple design. The true drama of mosaic is in the choice of materials and how they are cut and placed. Students will have the opportunity to use a variety of tools to make their cuts. Instruction will also include how and where to source bases for mosaic, how to prepare your base and what to avoid!

Payment
Class size is limited, so register early to avoid disappointment. Pre-registration is required for all classes and is on a first-come, first served basis with full payment. Registrations can be made online, in person, by phone, fax or mail.

Cheque, cash, debit, VISA and MasterCard payments are accepted. NOTE: 13% HST must now be added to all Adult Class Fees. A $20 charge is applied to NSF cheques.

Refunds/Cancellations
Occasionally a class will not reach its full enrollment and must be canceled, in which case a class refund will be issued. Otherwise, class refunds are issued for medical reasons only with presentation of a doctor’s certificate. A $10 administration fee applies.
