CALL FOR ARTISTS – Walter Gretzky Portrait

JANUARY 12, 2021 – We are thrilled to have received an unprecedented amount of entries from all over Canada for the Walter Gretzky Call for Artists!  As a result, we need to give our Jurors more time to carefully review entries.  An award announcement will be made the week of February 1!

IMPORTANT UPDATE ON WALTER GRETZKY CALL FOR ARTISTS – The deadline for submissions will remain Friday January 8, 2021 at 5 pm.

The Glenhyrst Art Gallery will be closed to the public due to the Provincial Lockdown. Please send submissions via Canada Post. Alternatively, the gallery will accept DROP OFF submissions on January 8th from 9 am to 12 noon ONLY.

GLENHYRST ART GALLERY is seeking Artists to submit proposals to create a portrait of Walter Gretzky.  The portrait will become the property of The Corporation of the City of Brantford and will be  located at the newly dedicated and renamed Walter Gretzky Municipal Golf Course, Banquet and Learning Academy located at 320 Balmoral Drive in Brantford, Ontario.

Artists will be selected by a partner-led jury through a process involving a written statement of approach, qualifications, and historical documentation.  The artist selection process will be managed by Glenhyrst and will follow the procurement processes and rules of the gallery.

Award:   $10,000 (including HST, if applicable)
First Submission Deadline:  Friday, January 8, 2021 at 5:00 PM (EST)

Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant is a regional art gallery in Brantford, Ontario providing the region with six annual exhibitions, over 35 events held per year, a variety of classes, workshops and camps for both adults and children, and a Permanent Collection with over 600 works.

Glenhyrst is dedicated to engaging our local and regional communities with art and culture. As such, we have been selected by the City of Brantford to facilitate the selection of an artist for the portrait work of Walter Gretzky.

The City owns and operates a municipal golf course located at 320 Balmoral Drive, Brantford, Ontario N3R 7S2, called Northridge Municipal Golf Course. In recognition of Mr. Gretzky’s significant contributions to the City of Brantford, especially Mr. Gretzky’s contributions to youth sports, as well as his frequent visits to Northridge Municipal Golf Course, the City wishes to re-name Northridge Municipal Golf Course to “The Walter Gretzky Municipal Golf Course, Banquet & Learning Academy”.   The dedicated portrait will be prominently displayed in the newly renovated clubhouse.

Artist Questions/Answers:

Q. Is the content of the commissioned artwork restricted to only the “pre-approved photograph”, Figure 1?

A. Yes, the artist is being commission to produce the “pre-approved photography” (Figure 1) in the Call for Artists ONLY.

Q. Would any consideration be given to an artist creating a new photographic artwork not based on Figure 1?

A. The Call does not restricted the medium, so an altered rendering of the pre-approved photograph could be submitted. But only the pre-approved photograph.

Q. Is the size of the commissioned artwork restricted to a maximum size of only 6′ x 8′?

A.  Yes, the commissioned art work can not be bigger than 6’ x 8′

Q. Would any consideration be given to an artist creating an artwork larger than 8′ x 6′?

A. Consideration will NOT be given to works that exceed the max. size of 6’ x 8’.

Q. Are BC artists eligible?
A. The Call for Artists is open to anyone who is a resident of Canada.

Q. For the image provided of Mr. Gretzky is there a high resolution source photo available – the image contained within the call is not high enough resolution for a painted portrait, a large file would be preferred.

A. The image in the Call for Artists is for reference only.  Once an artist is selected, a larger file will be provided to use as reference to create the actual commissioned piece.
